FDA To Investigate Tattoo Chemicals

For the first time, FDA scientists have launched an effort to identify the chemical components of the inks used by tattoo artists, in response to spate of reports of rashes, swelling, blistering, and cracking of skin due to tattoos or permanent makeup. The study, which hopes to identify the long term effects and risks of tattoo inks on the human body, may mark the beginning of FDA regulation of an industry whose governance has largely been overlooked or left to state, rather than federal, authorities.

The FDA has said that tattoo inks contain some 50 known pigments, many of which are "industrial strength," and none of which have been approved for use in humans.
