143 Million Pound Beef Recall Largest in Nation's History

A recent beef recall affecting some 143 million pounds of beef is the largest in the nation's history, say officials. The recall, which affects beef products from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. dating back to Feb. 1, 2006, came as the Southern California factory was under fire for alleged animal cruelty. An investigation into the treatment of nonambulatory or "downer" cows at the plant revealed that Westland was in violation of health regulations by failing to contact a veterinarian when cows became unable to stand or walk.

While no disease or health hazard has been confirmed, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) says the recall is necessary as a precautionary measure against possible safety risks.
