Common Medications Found to React Adversely with Thyroid Drugs

Monday, 15 September 2008 01:55 by Admin

The USDA has found that over 29 known medications has been tested and have been to react adversely to the thyroid medication Levothyroxine and all of its sister drugs (Levo-T, Levoxyl, Novothyrox, Synthroid, Thyro-tabs, Unitroid).  Levothyroxine was designed to treat hypothyroidism, a thyroid hormone deficiency.  In 2007, it was one of the most prescribed drugs, with over 70 million prescriptions that year. This is why it is so important to stay informed on what drugs have adverse effects. Some of these common drugs include:

·         Calcium drugs, like Tums or Rolaids

·         Ofloxacin, which is in grape fruit juice

·         St. Johns Wart

There is a long list of drugs which can either interfere with the efficiency of Levothyroxine or can cause a drop in blood pressure and binding in the blood.  If you are concerned that you may be experiencing problems with Levothyroxine, talk to your doctor about the other medications that you take in conjunction with Levothyroxine to find out if you are being affected.
