Biaxin is the label-name for a version of antibiotics called macrolide antibiotics. This class of antibiotics is used to treat bacterial infections in many parts of the body such as the ears, throat, lungs, sinuses, and skin. It is also used as part of a combination of medicines used to combat stomach ulcers caused by bacteria. It is also used for the treatment and prevention of certain types of mycobacterial infections.Biaxin does not work for common viruses such as the common cold or the flu.
Some side effects of the drug are serious. The serious reactions are generally very rare but should still be taken into account. These include severe skin rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, throat, eyes, tongue, or lips, yellowing of the skin or eyes, and a fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat. If any of these side effects occur, you should see a doctor.
If you have heart disease, some antibiotics have been tested to see if there is any correlation between antibiotics and improved heart disease. These studies have shown that there is neither a benefit nor a cost to taking antibiotics. However, a recent placebo-based study in Denmark reported an increase in heart-related deaths for patients treated with Biaxin as compared to patients that received a placebo.
