A recent study performed by the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust and Duke University has shown an increased risk of asbestos disease and mesothelioma in sheet metal workers. The study ran from 1986 through 2004, following 17,345 sheet metal workers who had at least 20 years experience in the field.
Health information was collected on the workers including smoking history, x-rays, and cause of death. The results of the statistical model showed that there was a "statistically significant excess mortality" for asbestosis, mesothelioma and pleural cancers. The results were similar to an earlier study which showed an excess of cancer in sheet metal workers.
