The American Journal of Industrial Medicine has reported that Department of Energy workers at four seperate plants have been exposed to harmful substances including asbestos. The exposure puts these workers at a particularly high risk of developing mesothelioma and other diseases.
A study spanning from the mid 1990s to 2004 included 9,000 DOE workers from the four plants. In that time 674 workers died, prompting the researchers to look at the cause of death. In their study, the researchers found that construction workers at the plants faced an especially high risk of developing lung cancer and mesothelioma.
