Five New York hospitals will be taking part in a medical malpractice pilot program that will be funded by the federal government and is being put in place to try and cut back on the costs of medical malpractice suits.
This plan hopes to lower these costs by settling malpractice suits quickly and taking them to judges instead of a full blown trial. And also, to reveal medical errors early so that problems will not get worse over time.
The pilot program will use judicial mediators that can be the voice between hospitals and families in order to settle medical malpractice issues, although a full trial is always an option. Officials are also hoping that this program will help hospitals see their errors so that they can reduce them.
