A wrong-way driver caused a car accident on Interstate 55 that killed one man.
According to Missouri Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 11:45 p.m. on I-55 and Bayless when a 46-year-old man was driving south in the northbound lanes and swerving in between lanes when he collided head-on with another vehicle.
The 51-year-old driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency officials were not able to extricate the 51-year-old man for over an hour because the engine went through the vehicle and into the cab of the car, pinning the man.
The highway lanes were closed while crews cleaned the scene.
